What Does Presbyterian Mean?

Presbyterians get their name from the Greek word presbuteros, which means elder. The word refers to how the church is governed according to the New Testament, under God. There is not one person to lead the congregation, but a group of elders (known as the Session) who are chosen by the congregation to spiritually lead them in Christ.

The Session consists of the Teaching Elder (also known as the Minister) and the Ruling Elders. The church also has Deacons who have the responsibility to care for the needs of the congregation and also a Board of Management who are entrusted with the financial and property administration in the church. Both of these groups are under the leadership of the Session.
